Land Rover LED Bulb Troubleshooting

Before troubleshooting any potential issues ensure that the light(s) in questions work when a standard filament bulb is fitted, this is recommended as if the lights do not work this tips won't help. Please choose from the available Lights below to find a solution:

Interior light bulb or light panel - Fails to illuminate

LED’s unlike filament bulbs only work with the polarity one way. It is possible to fit this bulb the wrong way around,  if the bulb fails to illuminate when an LED is fitted turn the bulb around 180 degrees and refit.

Defender Front Side lights / Stop Tail Lights / Fog / Reverse / Indicators - Fail to illuminate

On some vehicles usually 300tdi and newer the wiring for the lights is wired incorrectly i.e. the plus wire is an earth and the earth is a plus. To resolve you must switch the wires back around to correct the polarity as follows:

1) Remove the 2 screws securing the lamp as if to change the bulb to gain access to the plug on the end of the wire.

2) Look in the end of the plug you will see a yellow cover using a small flat screwdriver or similar prise it off (see photo)

3) Then looking inside the plug you will notice a very small little tags holding the metal pins (connectors in place) again using a small screwdriver/needle push the tags up one at time whilst gently pulling the cables out. Once you have removed the wires switch them around and then put the yellow cover back on and reconnect.

Defender High Level brake light - Fails to illuminate

LED’s unlike filament bulbs only work with the polarity one way. Change the polarity by swapping the red wire for black and black for the red.

Discovery Side Lights - Fail to illuminate

LED’s unlike filament bulbs only work with the polarity one way. It is possible to fit this bulb the wrong way around,  if the bulb fails to illuminate when an LED is fitted turn the bulb around 180 degrees and refit.

Defender Gauge and Speedometer bulbs - Fail to illuminate

LED’s unlike filament bulbs only work with the polarity one way. It is possible to fit this bulb the wrong way around,  if the bulb fails to illuminate when an LED is fitted turn the bulb around 180 degrees and refit.

Where is the Flasher Relay on the Defender

Pre 2002 behind the fuse box
Post 2002 behind the instrument binnacle attached to the bulkhead.

Indicators flash too quickly

Replace flasher relay with our LED flasher relay.

All indicators flash when I indicate any direction

Do you have an early 90 / 110? If yes you may need to put back the filament 501 bulbs back in your wing side repeaters. This is because on earlier vehicles it's possible for a small amount of current to leak through the indictor warning light on the dash into the other side of the circuit powering all indicators simultaneously. This happens because LED's are very low current draw and normally the current leak is not enough to power the high current draw filament bulbs but is more than enough for the LED's.
